My first trip to the Monahans Sand Hills state park was a disaster. Months before I had become convinced that I had a serious heart problem, and for no good reason. I saw a few doctors and had several scans and tests. They said I was healthy, and tried to convince me it was anxiety. Me? Anxiety? No way, I'll just push through this.
I believe it was in December that my college buddy came down from Dallas to go with me on a photography trip to west Texas. Our first stop was Monahans to photograph the sand dunes, after which we would go on to Big Bend National Park. Our plan was to camp there at the sand dunes that night. It was cold, cloudy, and very windy, and we had been on the road for 9 hours. When we arrived, it was practically deserted and I just had a sick feeling inside like I wasn't going to survive the trip. I felt like my heart would stop beating at any moment. I became sick to my stomach thinking about the cold, and the overcast clouds and the pressure I placed on myself to create photographs despite these feelings. I honestly don't know how it could have gotten so bad, but after 30 minutes of sitting in the parking lot and tumbling these dark, irrational thoughts in my head, I discussed the situation over with my friend and decided I couldn't go on with the trip. We turned around and drove back home.
I decided to trust the doctors, something I was very reluctant to do, and get a prescription to help me function. Months later I rescheduled the trip and thankfully my buddy was able to come down again to give me another chance. Again, our first stop was Monahans. We had left early that morning so this time we arrived early afternoon. The air was warm, but the sky still overcast and the wind was strong. I was still worried that this trip would end like the last, but I pushed those fears down the best I could.
While I didn't find the sand dunes themselves very inspirational, after some searching, I found this beautiful dead branch winding its way through the sand like a mythological sea creature. Behind it was a very odd grouping of desert weeds which happened to be organized by size, with the final one being full grown and bent completely over, resting on it's side.
I can't interpret what's going on in this photograph. I don't intend to create a metaphor of my thoughts or feelings because I find those things to be chintzy and over-the-top frankly. But when I was sitting there on my knees looking through the viewfinder at this scene in front of me, my lingering fears evaporated and I just knew it was going to be a good trip.

Great care is taken to ensure my fine art prints show the colors and tones that are intended. Due to variances of color and tone in displays, what you see on your monitor, tablet, or phone may be somewhat different than the colors and tones of the print.
Regular production time for a typical order is about a week. If I expect it to take longer, I will let you know.
