San Francisco de Assis Church

Taos, New Mexico

It's always exciting to walk in the footsteps of the icons of American art. I love to see how those places depicted in iconic artwork compare with real life. This was one such stop on my New Mexico trip. The back of the historic San Francisco de Assis church in Taos was photographed by Ansel Adams and painted by Georgia O'Keeffe, among many others.

Upon first arriving in the parking lot, I made two immediate observations. The first was that this stop reminded me of my visit to the Alamo. Here is a special place, if not just for the age of it, that has been encroached upon by relatively modern residential and commercial buildings. I expected this church to be set apart from modern civilization. Instead, it shares a parking lot with a BBQ joint, a few gift and artist shops, and several small residences. Across the busy street is a hotel. I didn't find it off-putting like how San Antonio has surrounded the Alamo with modern city life, but it did surprise me how dense the area is. I wonder what it looked like one hundred years ago? Or two hundred years ago shortly after it was finished?

My second observation was how striking and abstract the simple geometry and smooth surface of the adobe mud is. At times I felt like I was already looking at a finished, two-dimensional minimalist artwork. Seeing compositions in my mind and then recreating them in my viewfinder felt natural.

I worked the area around the church for a few hours before sunset and left that evening feeling satisfied that I had created strong compositions that were faithful to my vision and style. It was like I had connected to the great artists that had worked the church before me, as I had, and I was able to tip my hat to them. Photo © copyright by Tim Herschbach.

Matted Print

Matted Print

These elegant open-edition and limited-edition matted prints are my most popular format. I personally create each of these beautiful art pieces in my studio in Texas. The photograph is printed on Vibrance Metallic paper, by Breathing Color, a Texas-based paper company. The print is then dry mounted in an archival mat which I hand-cut to fit the image. These matted prints are ready to be inserted into a frame of the same size.

Please note that the size listed is the size of the mat, or frame size, not the photograph size. The mat edges are roughly 2" to 5" wide, depending on the mat size chosen. For example, a 16"x20" Matted Print will have a mat size of 16"x20" and a viewable image size of roughly 12"x16". A 56"x40" Matted Print will have a mat size of 56"x40" and a viewable image size of roughly 48"x32".

The mat is signed on the lower right and numbered on the lower left. The print is also signed and numbered underneath the mat in case you'd like to put the photograph into a different mat.

Each size of Matted Print has its own limited edition. Learn more about my Limited Editions.

Canvas Print

Canvas Print

Canvas prints are both beautiful, durable, and affordable. I create these canvas prints by hand in my home studio in Texas. The photograph is printed on thick and heavy Lyve canvas, by Breathing Color, a Texas-based company. I then spray-laminate the canvas to protect the inks from moisture and abrasions and to add a lovely satin finish. The canvas is then stretched on sturdy 1.5" stretcher bars and presents with a black edge. If you'd like a different edge color, please let me know.

The canvas will come with soft bumpers on the lower corners to protect your walls, a label of authenticity, and a cable that makes it ready-to-hang, straight out of the box.
